Recall petition filed vs Cebu mayor

Monday, July 4, 2011

CEBU ? Vice Mayor Ramon ?Nito? Durano III finally filed a petition to recall his brother, Davao City Mayor Ramon ?Boy? Durano Jr., before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday.

Durano?s co-petitioners are City Councilors Jorge John Cane, Cynthia Arnado Duterte, Miguel Antonio Magpale, Alejandro Lawas, Marilou Camaongay Flores-Flores, Jose Thaddeus Roble, Carmen Remedios Durano-Meca, Roland Reyes, Jovelina Manulat-Enriquez and Ramonette Cynthia Durano-Mahinay.

In their petition, they cited loss of confidence on Boy arising from his refusal to recognize the power of the City Council, gross incompetence or failure of governance, failure to maintain peace and order situation in the city, failure to stop rampant illegal gambling, which is being organized by people closely identified with the mayor, and allowing outsiders to meddle in the affairs at City Hall.

Aside from the petition filed before the Comelec, the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC), led by president Ramonette Cynthia Durano-Mahinay, Vice Mayor Durano?s daughter, passed Resolution No. 03-2011 expressing loss of confidence to the administration of Boy and supporting the people?s clamor for a recall election.

The petition, together with attached signatures of 31,000 voters gathered in the past three months, was received and acknowledged by City Election Officer Dominic Ian Marigomen, in the presence of Provincial Election Supervisor Marco Lionel Castillano.

Lawyer Guiller Ceniza, counsel of the petitioners, and Representative Ramon ?Red? Durano VI (Cebu 5th district) were also present.

Nito said that because Danao City has 78,000 voters, they only need 15,000 signatures to initiate a recall election. However, more people want to participate in the recall election hence the number reached 31,000.

?I will run for mayor,? Nito said.

Nito added that he got 31,000 votes when he ran for mayor in 2007 and had a majority of votes against his brother, Jesus ?Don? Durano.

On May 10, 2010 election, Nito got 42,000 votes and he is hoping that he will get the same number by the time the Comelec will conduct a recall election.

Mayor Durano and his administrator Jesus 'Don' Durano, also a brother, filed on Monday afternoon before the Danao City Prosecutors' Office a complaint for usurpation of public functions against Vice Mayor Durano and his four children, including ABC president Mahinay. (EOB)
