Dad | Meanwhile, at the Manse

This photo of Dad was taken just a short time before he died in December 2004. It was taken by Lance Crossley, then a reporter with the Minden (Ont.) Times, who did a really nice feature story on Dad?s project of building stone fences at the family farm. We thought Lance?s photo did a wonderful job of showing the real Wendell, and we placed it on Dad?s casket at the funeral visitation. I also used it to accompany the piece I wrote about him for the Globe and Mail?s Lives Lived column.

I?ve mentioned my father, Wendell Sedgwick, many times in the months since I started this blog, starting with explaining that the whole reason I grew up in the Manse in Queensborough was that Dad was the minister at the United Church of Canada?s Queensborough Pastoral Charge between 1964 and 1975. But I feel that despite all the references, I haven?t really said very much about him. It?s oddly difficult; Dad meant so much to all of us in his family, and when we talk about him amongst ourselves we don?t have to recount what he was like. It is deep shared knowledge, something that unites us without having to be voiced. So how to voice it?

Today, the day that would have been Dad?s 81st birthday, I wanted to try.

I thought I could at least start by sharing this piece I wrote for the Lives Lived column in The Globe and Mail. It was published on June 28, 2005, a little over six months after Dad?s death. I found it difficult to write, but I felt I owed him that small tribute. And I knew he would have been pleased, because he was a devoted lifelong reader of (and frequent letter-writer to) The Globe. Here it is.

Farmer, forester, minister. Born Aug. 29, 1931, on the family farm near Gelert, Ont. Died Dec. 11, 2004, on the family farm, in an accident, aged 73.

?So much to do and so little time in which to do it.? Anyone who knew Wendell Sedgwick well had heard him say that hundreds of times. He always said it in a sad way ? mournfully, really. Work was the defining theme of Wendell?s life. He knew he could never finish all that he felt he had to do. But he never stopped trying.

In his mid-20s, he left the farm to attend the University of Toronto and become a United Church of Canada minister. He seemed to feel an urgency to do as much with his life as he could. He had probably thought a lot about the parable in which Jesus tells his listeners it is their Creator?s will that they make the most of the talents they have been given.

Wendell had talents in abundance. He read voraciously, and had a startling memory for what he had read. He could recite poetry by heart from an apparently bottomless repertoire. (He also made up poems, generally funny ones, on the spot, never having to pause to think about what the next line would be.) He had shone in all subjects at school. And he was athletic, tall and strong.

For most of his 33-year ministry in rural central Ontario, Wendell conducted three services each Sunday. He was a commanding presence in the pulpit, uncompromising in his faith and his sense of right and wrong. But he was never self-righteous. He once told a newspaper reporter: ?I know my own failings and preach to that, and the people usually have some of the same feelings.? And just as he preached a God of love and forgiveness, he was slow to judge others, always looking for (and generally finding) the best in people.

It must have helped in his ministry that, because of his farming background, he understood the life his parishioners led. His visits to people?s homes in his capacity as clergyman were more than likely to end in a discussion of what to do about a sick calf or troublesome piece of equipment. He was someone people naturally turned to in time of need, and not just spiritual need.

Ever since he had left home for university, there had been the question of who would maintain the Sedgwick farm. The answer turned out to be: Wendell. Throughout his ministry, every July (officially his ?vacation?) plus two days a week whenever possible the rest of the year, he was there, working from dawn until long after dark, trying to do in a few hours and weeks what it would take anyone else the full year to accomplish.

When he ?retired? in 1997 he could devote himself full-time to the farm. He built up his herd of beef cattle. He spent a lot of time in the bush, clearing out dead and dying trees (to make way for new, healthier growth) and turning them into lumber on his sawmill. He made maple syrup. He plowed and planted and harvested. He built a fence of the stones from his rocky fields.

Wendell?s sudden death was a wrenching blow to his family and a wide circle of friends, neighbours and former parishioners. He was a person to whom many looked for wisdom, guidance and help, and it was ? and is ? hard to imagine life without him. But none who knew him, especially his children, will forget the lessons he taught through example, about being honest and generous, and always doing your best, and working hard.

And there is an odd but real comfort in the fact that when he died, he was doing what he always wanted to be doing: working on the farm.

Katherine is the eldest of Wendell?s four children.

SARATOGA SPRINGS ? The city-owned parking lot on Broadway known as the Lillian?s lot isn?t expected to be city-owned much longer.

Mayor Scott Johnson said he expects the final sale of the lot to Sonny Bonacio to go through within the next 30 days.

The $750,000 sale was negotiated in 2007 and was all but completed in 2009, but Bonacio held off on finalizing the sale until plans for the building he proposed locating there were approved by the city?s land-use boards.

The Planning Board and Design Review Commission have both already approved the building plans.

Johnson said it was important for the sale to be delayed until after the parking garage was completed on Woodlawn Avenue, particularly since the parking lots on which the parking garage was built were already being closed for the construction, temporarily eliminating much-needed downtown parking.

?We didn?t want to lose that lot plus the lots on Woodlawn Avenue,? he said.

Johnson said construction of a new building will fill a hole along Broadway that many people in the city probably don?t even notice anymore ? a hole that was created when the F.W. Woolworth building burned down in 1957.

?I think when people see that building, sometime in the not-too-distant future they won?t even remember it was a parking lot,? Johnson said.

Bonacio did not return requests for comment.

Proceeds from the sale of the lot are earmarked to go toward the cost of constructing the now-finished $4.7 million Woodlawn Avenue parking lot. Continued...

If the Planning Board approves, the bottom floor of the building will have its 13,500 square feet of retail space divided into numerous shops. Alleyways on either side of the building will be well-lit and house some of the entrances to the storefronts.

The second story of the building is proposed with office space and the top two floors are designed to have 16 apartments. The structure will rise 1-1/2 stories over the existing Cantina and Lillian?s restaurants.

From darkness to gold: Blinded Navy swimmer ready to race

Lt. Brad Snyder lost his sight in an IED explosion in Afghanistan last year. The Navy officer will once again represent the U.S., this time at the London 2012 Paralympics.

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

The man who views only black today is visualizing all the colors of his London swims. In his mind, he sees the aqua-blue pool frothy with wakes, the home stretch of the lane lines painted red, and the dark, wide mouths of roaring fans.

Behind prosthetic blue eyes ? replacements for the natural pair he lost after an explosion in Afghanistan nearly a year ago???Navy Lt. Brad Snyder soaks in the scenery of a dream realized. The 2012 Paralympics open today in Britain. Snyder races for gold Friday.

Already, though, he can glimpse a distinct, happy glow.

Related: 'Meet the Superhumans': Paralympians burst onto world stage?

?During the Olympics, I read about the races, about (Michael) Phelps and (Ryan) Lochte and Missy Franklin. I heard the commentary and used that to pull out the details to produce this image,? Snyder said. ?But instead of reading about Lochte, I just implanted myself in there.

?I imagine stepping onto the block, hearing ?take your mark,? the sound of the start, hopping in the pool then just being smooth and strong down the middle of the lane, executing some good turns, and hitting the pad at the end. I?m imagining success. I?m imagining the good feeling that comes with competing well.?

As an elite athlete???among blind swimmers he is No. 1 in the world at three freestyle distances (50-, 100- and 400-meters)???Snyder draws such mental pictures as a preparation tool. As a result, nothing in or around the London pool, he said, should feel unfamiliar.

Lt. Brad Snyder, blinded by an IED explosion in Afghanistan, is now training for the London 2012 Paralympics.

But in a life being rebuilt after severe injury, this ironic tactic is simply how the man endures.

?I?ll tell you a little story,? said his mother, Valarie Snyder. ?He was describing his apartment to me: ?It has the most beautiful rooftop view.? That?s how our conversations go all the time. It?s been rare that he gets down, and even then he apologizes for it: ?Sorry I was in a bad mood.? ?

The bright side is never far off. But total darkness came in a single stride. On Sept. 7, 2011, the former Navy bomb defuser was rushing forward to help two Afghan soldiers wounded in an initial IED blast. In his dash, Snyder stepped on a second hidden bomb in an irrigation ditch spanning a farm field. His eyes were irreparably damaged by the detonation and later were removed by a surgeon.

Once a member of the Naval Academy swim team, Snyder returned to the water about a month later???this time, seeking a familiar, soft place in a world suddenly filled with surprise, hard edges.

?I was there the first day he got back in the pool,? his mother recalls. ?Just to see the sheer joy on his face. On the ride home afterward he told me: ?I can do this, mom. I can swim competitively. Everything new that I can do just makes me realize: this isn?t such a bad thing.? ?

The warm water also rekindled an ultra-competitive, inner furnace, driving Snyder to begin training in Baltimore with Brian Loeffler, head swimming coach at Loyola University. His new goal: earn a spot on the U.S. Paralympic swim team and compete at the world?s second-largest sporting event, the Paralympics. He punched his London ticket in June after a series of spectacular sprints at the time trials in Bismarck, N.D.

He strolls into London?s Olympic Stadium today with 226 other disabled American athletes???one of 20 active or former service members on the U.S. team, and one of six wounded during combat in Iraq or Afghanistan.

?There?s a girl who was in a coma for four years. There are people dealing with moderate cerebral palsy,? Snyder said. ?It puts everything in perspective when I?m contending with my own little issue to see what everybody on the team puts up with. It humbles you. Every person on the roster is one of the most amazing people I?ve met.?

Yet each teammate also is an accomplished athlete who outperformed hundreds of Paralympic hopefuls to make the cut. For context, simply peruse two of Snyder?s post-injury times. In the 50-meter freestyle: 26.54 seconds ? better than 10 Olympians who swam in London; and in the 100-meter freestyle: 57.75???quicker than three 2012 Olympians.

The 100-meter free on Friday offers Snyder his first crack at a medal, and it unleashes an aggressive schedule of seven events over nine days. In addition to his three world-best times, he?s currently ranked No. 2 among blind swimmers in the 100-meter butterfly and No. 4 in the 200-meter individual medley. For each event, Loeffler works as Snyder?s ?tapper,? using a walking cane to touch Snyder?s shoulders to alert him that the wall is near and that a flip turn or final push is required.

?His order of events sets up well since the sprints are early in the week (and) I do expect he will do well in his early events,? said Loeffler, who also serves as the co-head coach of the American Paralympic swim team. ?(But) we have focused his training toward the 400 free.?

For Snyder, his coach and his family, that is the race of races, scheduled for Sept. 7???exactly one year to the day he stepped on the bomb.

?It?s difficult to imagine and quantify the emotions I?ll be running through that day. But it?s going to be a moment that I?m going to enjoy. Because to me, competing on that day means that I was presented a challenge and I experienced some success in my transition to blindness. I conquered my adversity to some extent. Obviously, the adversity is not conquered. I?m still blind at the end of the day,? Snyder said. ?But it means I?ve walked the path from being chained to the bed at exactly a year ago to competing on an international level at event like the Paralympics. It means I won a little bit.?

All of the people who huddled near that bed last September at Bethesda Naval Hospital outside Washington, D.C. will be in the crowd in London???his two brothers, his sister, an aunt and his mother???who calls herself ?a weeper? and who fully expects a gush of tears, win or lose.

?From getting the phone call that morning from his commanding officer to not knowing what we were about to go through to what we went through the past year and then to see all that he has accomplished, well, it?s going to be amazing,? Valarie Snyder said.

?He shared something with me not long ago. He said that every little boy dreams of doing something great in their life in sports. If you?re a runner or a swimmer, you dream of one day going to the Olympics. But when you grow up," she added, "you realize that was just a dream."

?He believes has been given the opportunity to actually fulfill his dream.?

'Blue moon' on same day as Neil Armstrong service

(AP) ? There's a rare 'blue moon' on Friday, a fitting wink to Neil Armstrong by the cosmic calendar.

That's the day of a private service for Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, who died last Saturday in Ohio at age 82.

A blue moon occurs when there's a second full moon in one calendar month. It won't happen again until July 2015. The full moon cycle is 29.5 days so a blue moon is uncommon and has come to mean something rare. The moon actually won't be colored blue.

Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb said the moon is far more important to lovers, literature and folklore than to science.

Armstrong's family has suggested paying tribute to him by looking at the moon and giving the astronaut a wink.

Deaf child's sign name too much like a gun?

The Facebook page "Let this Deaf Child Keep His Name Sign" is designed to garner support for Hunter Spanjer, a deaf boy whose name sign resembles a weapon.

Updated at 9:15 p.m. ET: Deaf 3-year-old Hunter Spanjer of Nebraska signs his first name with a gesture resembling a gun, and his parent say his school wants him to stop. School officials say they haven't asked any deaf students to change how they sign their names.

The preschooler's father, Brian Spanjer, took to Facebook Sunday to garner support to allow his son to continue using the S.E.E. (Signing Exact English) symbol at the Early Learning Center?he began attending last week. The Facebook page, "Let this Deaf Child Keep His Name Sign," had more than 4,300 likes by Tuesday evening.

Hunter has used the name sign since he was 6 months old, when the school district started working with him, Janet Logue, Hunter's grandmother,?told NBC News.

The name combines the symbol for the letter h for hunt, the thumb down along index and middle fingers extended together and waved, with the letter r, crossing the two fingers, Logue explained.

?Hunter is kinda confused? at school now, where teachers are spelling his name out to him, Logue said.

Spanjer posted a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union, which Hunter?s grandmother, Janet Logue, described in a comment as the civil rights organization citing legal cases and telling the Grand Island Public Schools it?s wrong and "politely asking them to rethink their position."

"My son broke down in tears, overwhelmed by the support he?s getting,"Logue said of the boy's father.

Brian Spanjer told NBC News he has vowed to fight until his son gets to keep?his name sign.

The name Hunter evolved from Brian Spanjer being a fan of outlaw music and admiring?singer Waylon Jennings' son?is named Shooter. Suggesting that name to?the boy's?mother, Morgan Hurt,?when she was pregnant?didn't go over well, Spanjer told NBC News. However, she found "Hunter" in a name book and offered it as a compromise and it stuck, he said.

Spanjer said he's shielding Hunter from the attention his dispute with the school district is generating.

"I am shocked this is an issue," he said. "As a parent you never think anyone would take issue with your child's name," he said. "When someone is named Christian, people don?t automatically go to religion," he said.

"I want to make sure this doesn?t happen to any other deaf child?or special needs child," he said.

The policy of Grand Island schools, about 145 miles west of Omaha, forbids students "to knowingly and voluntarily possess, handle, transmit or use any instrument in school, on school grounds or at school functions that is a firearm, weapon, or looks like a weapon?"

Because of privacy rules?a school spokesman could not directly address the Spanjers' complaint.

"Grand Island Public Schools has not changed the sign language name of any student, nor is it requiring any student to change how his or her name is signed,"?district spokesman Jack Sheard said in a prepared statement.?"The school district teaches American Sign Language ("ASL") for students with hearing impairments. ASL is recommended by the Nebraska Department of Education and is widely used in the United States. The sign language techniques taught in the school district are consistent with the standards of the Nebraska Department of Education and ASL. ... Our mission remains: Every Student, Every Day, a Success!"

"It?s unfortunate we?re getting a black eye for something when we?re really dedicated to that goal," Sheard told NBC News.

Brian Spanjer said he doesn't have any issue with Hunter learning ASL too, but he hopes to have an S.E.E. interpreter for his son. He said he prefers S.E.E.'s exact language approach to signing over ASL's.

Thomas Edison artifacts need repair

When Thomas Edison finally hung up his lab coat, it still had acid burns from chemistry experiments carried out at the U.S. inventor's West Orange laboratory in New Jersey. Repairs helped erased the burn marks, but added wear and tear from decades of display on a wire hanger has compelled the U.S. National Park Service to launch a new conservation project.

The worn lab coat is just one of three artifacts in need of repair at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park. A second object, a faded American flag, represented a 1920 gift commemorating the 43rd anniversary of the "Ediphone" dictating machine. The third artifact hangs behind Edison's desk in his laboratory library ? a projection screen that is likely the world's oldest movie screen by being dated to at least 1893.

"Probably most significant of the three is Edison's laboratory coat," said Joan Harris-Rico, collections manager at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park. "It's made of cotton in the duster style, and has hung in the chemistry lab for decades."

    1. Egypt's 'Google Earth pyramids' revisited

Updated 114 minutes ago 8/29/2012 12:27:49 AM +00:00 Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Remember that researcher who thought she spotted previously undiscovered Egyptian pyramids in Google Earth imagery? There really are some ruins in one of the pictures, but they?re not pyramids.

The National Park Service has $20,000 in funding approved for cleaning and repairing the artifacts housed at Edison's former West Orange laboratory and Glenmont home. That laboratory complex came after Edison's first lab, built in Menlo Park, N.J.

Edison remains celebrated for having helped pioneer practical light bulbs, the sound recording industry and for helping commercialize movies. But his artifacts also bear silent testimony to the legacy of laying down the blueprint for modern innovation ? bringing together a diverse group of Ph.D. chemists, machinists and inventors to all work under the same roof. [ Thomas Edison: America's First Modern Innovator ]

The lab coat carried a particularly poignant note for visitors as a personal reminder of Edison's work. But the national park staff has removed the coat from public display until it can be repaired.

"It not only has high historical value, but is also a favorite object of returning visitors," Harris-Rico told InnovationNewsDaily. "People will often ask, 'Where is the lab coat?'"

The U.S. flag remains on display in a wood and glass wall-mounted case, but its fabric colors have faded from 90 years of exposure to ultraviolet light. The fabric has "puckered" due to gravity's inexorable pull, and it also shows signs of both insect activity and water damage.

Harris-Rico and her colleagues hope to return the repaired flag to a new display case that has UV-filtered Plexiglas protection and without the acidic cardboard backing in the existing case.

Conservators could remove both the lab coat and flag to do their preservation work, but they probably won't enjoy the same luxury with Edison's ancient projection screen. The huge canvas, stretching 18 feet by 18 feet, hangs from a wood roller attached to the underside of the library's second floor balcony.

The screen's blemishes include at least one tear and brittleness near its stained bottom edge. But the full extent of the damage remains unknown until the screen gets unrolled ? a process still done manually by a large wooden handle almost 120 years later.

The Life of Marriage: Shepherding Relationships through ...

All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Life is full of disappointment. Why is it we always feel disappointed with our partner, friends, family, and sometimes, our life? According to the dictionary the word ?disappoint? means ?to fail to fulfill the expectations or wishes of.

From childhood we are always conditioned to sate others? whims, our parents?, teachers?, family members? or peers?. How many times do we hear the proud young mother blathering on the comparison between her child and another about achievements in potty training skills, talking, reading or swimming skills, among other accrued jealousies?

As we mature, not only do we have a certain perspective of our capabilities and sense of achievement, but we also begin to set standards, as it were, amongst ourselves, too. This is great when the encouragement registers optimism sourced from one?s passion and confidence. After all, a healthy competition is stimulating ? especially when we feel we have a fighting chance to succeed. But what happens when we lack confidence, and we do things constantly to please others with a sense of duty rather than pleasure or joy? What happens when we don?t live up to expectations? What happens when no matter how hard we try, we cannot achieve that ?acceptable level?? What happens when we suffer setback after setback and there?s nothing we can do to work it out? Who sets the standards, though, that we accept and try to live up to?

In this situation disappointment emerges as a problem, failure begets problem. Sometimes people don?t know how to handle their problems. Others ended up doing drugs, drinking alcohol, they think drugs and alcohol will solve their problem instead of a painted solution in the mind. Everyone experiences a problem in life. Sometimes such a problem can get in the way of achieving your goals and enjoying your life. At times like these it can be helpful to talk to a counselor. Counseling in Los Angeles provides free and confidential personal counseling for people who seek professional psychological help and advice. Addiction in Los Angeles is not a problem anymore because there are lots of counselors out there who are willing to help them be freed from addiction. Also they have anger management in Los Angeles.

Generally, people seek counseling because they need help to solve an issue or problem. There are many reasons why people seek counseling, and no matter the reason is, for most people, it takes a lot of courage to make the first step. After this stage, it requires you to commit yourself to the process of counseling. For this reason, it is vital that you find a therapist whom you can trust and work with.

Find The Home Improvement Tips You Need ?

One of the best home improvements for your house is a wood deck addition. Not only is it a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors, it also offer a great return on your investment when you re-sell your home. Most homeowners recoup 81 percent of the money that they spent on this home improvement. Just remember to do proper maintenance each year to the deck to optimize it?s return potential.

Before you begin your next home improvement project, think about how long you would like to stay in your home. If you are planning to move this year, you may have a different budget for improvements than if you were staying for awhile. You would also want to focus on areas in the home, like the kitchen and bathrooms, that buyers think are most important.

A great way to add ambience to a room is by lighting a candle. Candles are a romantic gesture in any setting, but also give off a warm glow providing a room with the feeling of warmth and coziness. If your candle is scented, it also gives off a nice scent in the room while making you feel relaxed.

Improve the resale value of your home, by remodeling the kitchen. Modern appliances, quality counter-tops and plenty of cabinet space gives the kitchen a better selling point. Families congregate in the kitchen, as it?s one of the most used areas of the home.

Face it ? not everyone needs ten cabinets for their dishes. If your small kitchen is in need of some extra space, consider removing the top row of cabinets. This frees up the wall space for artwork or decorative wall covering and gives you more room to be creative with your cooking surfaces.

Paint a room. If you are looking for a home improvement project that takes a bit of time and effort, then painting may be for you. Make sure you have all the proper equipment to do the project, and go for it. A freshly painted room can do wonders for any home.

If you have the money then you should try and add a master suite to your home. While having a nice large bedroom is great it will tremendously help during resale if the bedroom area includes a bathroom and/or a sitting area. The majority of buyers tend to lean toward homes that have master suites.

Don?t ignore local characteristics when adding improvements. A pool is perfect in Miami, but not so much in Vermont. A beach house with a deck works well in southern California, but the winds at the beach in Hyannis, Massachusetts would blow away every last deck chair. Features that are not usable in your area?s climate will add no value to your home.

Make use of the internet to help you complete your projects. On the web, you can find the information you need to choose the right tools and buy the lowest-priced, most highly-effective supplies. In addition, you can usually confirm your plans by consulting online references, and get tips and strategies to help you get your work done successfully.

If the purpose of your home improvement project is to help sell the house, you should keep in mind that simple cosmetic changes are often more effective than installing new complex systems. For example, while a floor heating system might be a very cool feature, a simple paint job is more effective. A paint job makes the house look fresh and attractive to all potential buyers, whereas a floor heating system is just a neat add-on and not a selling point.

If you are planning a do-it-yourself renovation, make a list of the steps you think are needed to finish the project, and then have an experienced contractor or builder check it for you. If you miss a major step in the planning stage, you could end up with sub-par work or a much more expensive renovation than you had budgeted for.

If you need more room due to a growing family, don?t sell your home. Instead, remodel it. Add on rooms or remodel the ones that you already have to make them bigger. This has some great benefits, it will save you a significant amount of money and the hassle of having to move.

Create space in a cramped bathroom. Build floor-to-ceiling cabinets, and store similar items in baskets. This avoids any clutter on the countertop. A corner storage unit in your shower is perfect for holding shampoo, conditioner and any other items you may need. A great tip for creating space is to get rid of everything that isn?t used on a regular basis. This can include out of date medications in your medicine cabinet or beauty products that you tried and didn?t like. By clearing these out, you will have plenty of room for things that you actually use!

Surely, you found the information that preceded to be helpful for many different projects around your house. A bit of knowledge about home improvement can go a long way in helping you transform your house into your home. Take on the challenge of making the improvements on your home with the help of the included information.
