Garbage-Free Lunch ? Saskatchewan Environmental Society

CFQC News At Noon ? August 28, 2012

According to wastefreelunches.org, one child?s disposable lunch generates an average of 30 kg (67 pounds) of waste each school year.? That is more than many elementary school students weigh!? For adults, who carry lunch year round, we may produce up to 45 kg (100 pounds) of lunch waste in a year.

Many pre-packaged foods are high in sodium and fat, as well as produce a lot of garbage.? Packing ?real? food for lunch can mean a much more nutritious meal.? Other advantages of a garbage free lunch are that parents can choose the portion sizes, and see what is and isn?t getting eaten because the leftovers come home.

If you happen to be in the habit of taking a prepackaged lunch, the hurdle here might be ideas of what to pack. ?So, here are some things we take in our lunches:

  • frozen leftovers to microwave
  • hot soup in a thermos
  • bagel and cream cheese
  • sandwich
  • cheese (when my daughter was little I used to cut the cheese into interesting shapes ? snowmen, swing sets ? fun like cheese strings)
  • yogurt
  • fresh fruit

If you buy fast food for lunch, try taking a reusable container with you to your favorite fast food place.? I started doing this after being shamed by my co-workers who saw me bringing Styrofoam containers to the office.? The first time I did it, I was embarrassed, and muttered to the man behind the counter, ?could you put my soup in here??? He looked at the container, shrugged, and then happily filled the container.
