Safe Shuttling With Children: How to Make Field Trips Fun and Safe

Travelling with a group of children will be what you make of it. There can be very frustrating moments or there can be tons of fun for everyone. It all comes down to what you have planned for the trip, the type of bus you select, and how long you have to be in the bus.

Selecting Your Bus

This is the most important factor when travelling with children. You need a rental bus that is all of these things:

? Safe for children
? Comfortable for everyone involved
? Appropriately sized to the number of travellers

Safety is obviously your first concern. You won't find any rental bus on the market safer than a school bus design. These buses are modelled after school buses and incorporate all of the safety measures found on school buses, but they are not bright yellow.

The bus also needs to be the right size for the number of people you have travelling with you. You want every child as well as all adult chaperones to have comfortable, safe seating. This requires you to pick the right sized bus according to the total number of travellers going along.

What's Happening on the Bus?

Once you have a safe rental bus that is appropriately sized to the number of travellers, it is up to you to plan for a fun field trip with the children. Don't just board a group of children onto a bus and expect them to sit still and be good for a long period of time. The longer the trip, the more ideas you will need to have on hand to keep them content and entertained until you get to your destination.

Here is a quick list of ideas you can use to keep children happy while on a longer bus ride:

? Pump them up for an upcoming game if you are travelling to a sports event. Have them do chants, songs, and other group activities that will get them in the mood to take the field and win.

? Create stories out loud. If you are travelling with a smaller group, go around the bus and have each child add a little bit to the story. You will be surprised where the story ends up once you get all the way around the bus.

? Sing songs. This an old time school bus activity that can still be fun today for kids of all ages. Bring a list of songs with you so you know what you are doing before boarding.

? Teach sign language or other skills that do not require getting up and moving around. Kids enjoy learning new things when they are presented in an entertaining manner. You have a captive audience, so why not use it to teach something educational?

? Bring pipe cleaners or other basic craft supplies and have children create something while they go down the road. Make sure nothing is brought that could ruin the seats or flooring and be prepared for a thorough cleaning of the bus before it is returned to the rental company.

There are a lot of things you can do to keep children entertained and happy on a bus ride. If you are travelling with older children you may even be able to give lectures or have serious conversations that will prepare them for the trip ahead.
