2 Everest climbs put Nepalese woman in record book

(AP) ? Nepalese mountaineer Chhurim entered the record book by scaling Mount Everest twice in the same climbing season. In fact, she did so a week apart.

Guinness World Records said she is the first woman to climb the world's highest mountain twice in the same season ? the brief window of good weather each year that allows climbers to reach the summit.

Nepal's Tourism Minister Posta Bahadur Bogati handed over the Guinness World Records certificate issued to 29-year-old Chhurim on Monday.

She scaled the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit on May 12, 2012, descended to the base camp for a couple of days' rest and then scaled the peak again a week later on May 19.

Chhurim, who uses only one name like most Sherpas, said she is not ready to quit.

"Everest is the first of the highest mountains that I have climbed, but I will continue mountaineering and hope to scale more peaks," she said.

Chhurim said there are not many women mountaineers and only a few of them have records.

"The male mountaineers have set many records but women have fallen behind. It can be difficult for women because they are considered not as strong as men and face many problems like finding toilets," she said.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association said Everest has been climbed by nearly 4,000 people since New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal did so in 1953. Women are a small number of them.

The extremely harsh weather conditions that batter the highest Himalayan peaks limit the climbing season to just a few weeks every year. Spring is the most popular season on Everest when hundreds of mountaineers attempt every year. The climbers generally reach the mountain in March or April, acclimatize to the higher elevation and low oxygen and train for climbing the snowy trail to the peak. The weather usually improves for a few days in May when they line up to the summit.

Ron Cook: Former Penguins coach Therrien, Canadiens thriving

They say there is no better sports city in which to win than New York, New York.

    Well, they might be wrong.

"This is a pretty good place to have success ... Montreal," Mike Therrien was saying Thursday over the telephone.

There is no more passionate fan base than that of the Canadiens. Therrien has experienced both sides of it. He felt the sting when he was fired in January 2003 after three seasons in his first run as Montreal coach. Now, after getting an unlikely second chance when he was hired again by the Canadiens in June, he owns the city. The Canadiens, who finished 15th -- dead last -- in the Eastern Conference last season, went into their home game Thursday night against the New York Islanders with an 11-4-1 record, the most points in the conference.

It's a remarkable story, one that has surprised the hockey world. But shouldn't the Canadiens' success under Therrien have been expected? Don't hockey people remember the job he did as Penguins coach? Don't they realize he's as good of a turnaround coach as there is in sports?

Therrien took over a Penguins team that was a disgrace in December 2005. His early days are remembered for his infamous rant after a home loss to Edmonton.

"That defensive squad, I think their goal is to be the worst defensive squad in the league. ... There's a lot of guys who don't care. They pretend to care, but I know they don't care."

But the tough love from Therrien worked for the Penguins. He demanded much-needed accountability, at times to the point that the players hated him. But the team improved by a franchise-record 47 points the next season. They went to the Stanley Cup final in 2007-08.

Eventually, the players tuned out Therrien. Tough love takes its toll. He was fired in February 2009 with the Penguins out of the playoff picture. Dan Bylsma took over as coach and led the team to the Stanley Cup. He deserves big props. But save some for Therrien, who left behind discipline and structure that contributed to the title.

Despite the success in Pittsburgh, Therrien wasn't a popular choice in Montreal. Many remembered his failures with the Canadiens the first time. Others felt he got the job only because he was French-Canadian, a Montreal native. The previous Canadiens coach, Randy Cunneyworth, was the franchise's first non-French speaking coach in four decades. His time with the team was a sporting disaster.

Therrien said he is much better-equipped to deal with the incredible pressure that goes with being the Montreal coach. His English is better, which is important in one of the world's best international cities. He's more comfortable being, well, Mike Therrien.

"I have my foundation as a coach, and that's probably the same," he said. "But you learn through the years. Experience means more than just getting gray hair. I was well-prepared for this challenge."

Therrien talked of "changing the culture" in Montreal, just as he did in Pittsburgh. "I tried to come in and communicate with the players." Therrien brought in a couple of trusted allies to have his back. He coached winger Brandon Prust back in their junior days and had winger Colby Armstrong with the Penguins.

"Those are character players," Therrien said. "You always want to surround yourself with quality people."

The players have bought into Therrien's system. They play an aggressive forecheck. They pressure the puck coming out of the opponent's zone. They believe good defense will lead to offensive opportunities.

"We gave the players a plan that we believe will lead to success," Therrien said. "They realize we're doing things to try to help them. It's been really good so far. We don't give up many shots. We don't give up many chances. If we stick to that, I believe we can be successful."

Goaltender Carey Price has been Montreal's best player, veteran center Tomas Plekanec its best forward. Therrien has been praised for bringing along rookie forwards Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher with a nice touch. But he might have done his best work with veteran winger Erik Cole and star defenseman P.K. Subban. Cole has struggled at times, prompting Therrien to cut his ice time. Subban was a contract holdout until Jan. 28, and Therrien delayed his return to the lineup by a game, then limited his playing time in the beginning.

    The message?

    The team comes above all.

    The other players noticed.

"Everyone has to be accountable for their actions," Therrien said. "That's always been my philosophy."

Pittsburgh fans will get their first look at Therrien behind the Canadiens bench when the Penguins play March 2 in Montreal.

"That's going to be a special night," Therrien said. "I enjoyed my time in Pittsburgh. I miss Pittsburgh. I have a lot of respect for those players and that organization."

It's nice to think Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Brooks Orpik, Marc-Andre Fleury and so many others have the same respect for Therrien even if they didn't always appreciate his methods. He did what a good coach is supposed to do. He didn't just make the players better. He helped them win a Cup.

Hangout features zero-G antics ? and cats!

Astronauts on the International Space Station star in NASA's first space-plus-Earth Google+ Hangout.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

NASA followed one of the classic rules for Internet videos during its first space-to-Earth Google Hangout on Friday: If you want to bring in the viewers, don't forget the cats.

Astronaut Tom Marshburn's demonstration of how an astronaut in the International Space Station's zero-gravity environment can imitate a falling kitty was one of the highlights of the hourlong video chat, which addressed more than 30 questions sent in via YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and real-time hookups with kids across the country.

One of the questions, phrased in the form of a video, came from the host of the "Smarter Every Day" webcast series, a rocket engineer known as Destin. (He keeps mum about his last name to protect his kids, who appear in the webcasts.) Destin ran his own mini-video showing how a falling cat rights itself in the air to land on its feet, and asked if the astronauts could match that feat in zero-G.

"We don't have any cats onboard," said space station commander Kevin Ford, "but we have a medical doctor who maybe can try to demonstrate the next best thing to a cat."

Marshburn, who's a physician as well as an astronaut, then proceeded to float in front of the camera and twist his body to change position ? not quite as adroitly as the cats, but not bad for a human.

"I hope you believe that what you saw happened with the cat isn't a mystery, and that it can happen in space, too," Ford concluded. You can watch the demonstration around the 33-minute mark in the Hangout video.

Other astronauts participating in the chat included Canada's Chris Hadfield aboard the station, and NASA's Ron Garan and Nicole Stott on the ground. They took questions passed along from social media by NASA moderator John Yembrick; from live-video hookups with classrooms at University High School in Orlando, Fla., and Mescalero Apache School in New Mexico; and from a youngster named Fred whose video link was facilitated by the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

    Google

Astronauts Tom Marshburn, Kevin Ford and Chris Hadfield join the Google+ Hangout.

Here are a few more nuggets from the video:

    • Hadfield said that this week's communications outage on the space station was "not that big a deal," and that the crew members were well-trained to operate the station even when they were out of contact with ground controllers. "It wasn't any sort of panic or anything, it was just us dealing with a problem on the ground, and our crew dealing with the problem on board," he said.?
    • Getting into the right sleep cycle is a big challenge on the space station, where there are 16 sunsets and sunrises every day. Garan said that when it gets close to bedtime, some astronauts avoid looking out the window at Earth's bright side. Stott said NASA is experimenting with a scheme that makes the lighting inside the space station more bluish for the "morning" of the astronauts' workday, and more orangish during the "evening."
    • The station's crew members showed off the medical kits they kept on board for health problems, but if there's a life-threatening emergency on board, astronauts would get into one of the Russian Soyuz capsules attached to the station and fly the stricken crew member back to Earth. "Our Soyuz is our ambulance," Marshburn said.?
    • When the astronauts were asked which scientist from the past they wish they could bring to the space station, Marshburn instantly said Isaac Newton, who drew up physics' three laws of motion in the 17th century. "We see what he could only imagine," Marshburn said.?
    • Taking pictures from space is a challenging task that requires advance training, due to the sharp contrast between the blackness of outer space and the brilliance of the planet below, Hadfield said. But there's one big plus: Because of the zero-G environment, it's a lot easier to handle huge telephoto lenses. "Every photographer in the world would love to have that much glass in front of their eyes ... and not have to balance it," Hadfield said.
    • When the astronauts were asked about their growing social-media stardom, Hadfield said, "I don't think anybody tries to push the edge of human experience more than we do." Being able to see the whole world below is "too good an experience not to share," and avenues such as Twitter, Facebook and Google+ help facilitate that, he said. He noted that a lot of the astronauts' popularity had to do with their unique perspective. "We know just how lucky we are to be here," Hadfield said.

For more outer-space video goodness, tune in the Weekly Space Hangout at 3 p.m. ET Friday. Yours truly will be on the screen along with other scribes to review the week's space news, including the meteor blast that hit Russia a week ago.
