Brussels Airlines Launches JFK; More Star Alliance Connections to Africa

Brussels Airlines, a Star Alliance member, will launch JFK-Brussels service beginning in June on their A330s.

The service will feature their new business class, which offers the same flat beds as those in SWISS, which most people find to be quite comfortable.

Most importantly, this offers Star Alliance members an additional way to get to Brussels (United offers 3-class 777 service with pretty good award availability from Newark), and take advantage of Brussels Airlines? extensive connections to Africa. US Airways Africa awards only require 70k miles in coach and 110k in business.

updated 7:37 p.m. ET Jan. 1, 2012

CLEVELAND - Isaac Redman replaced an injured Rashard Mendenhall and ran for a touchdown as Pittsburgh limped into the AFC playoffs with a 13-9 win Sunday over Cleveland, the Steelers' 16th victory in 17 games against the Browns.

Redman scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter for the Steelers (12-4), who finished tied with Baltimore for first in the AFC North but lost the tiebreaker because the Ravens beat them twice.

The Steelers had to survive two fumbles by Redman in the second half and a pass into the end zone by the Browns (4-12) on the final play that was batted down.

Mendenhall hurt his right knee in the first quarter on a short run and didn't return. His status for the postseason is unknown.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger passed for 221 yards on a severely sprained ankle.

Boat capsizes off Lamu in Kenya, at least 7 dead (Reuters)

NAIROBI (Reuters) ? At least seven people died and many more were feared missing after a boat carrying dozens of passengers hit another vessel and capsized off the Kenyan island of Lamu on Sunday evening, the Kenya Red Cross said.

Nelly Muluka-Oluoch, a Kenya Red Cross spokeswoman, said 20 survivors had been found so far and the boat may have been carrying up to 80 passengers. She said rescue teams were searching for more survivors into the night.

The boat was taking people from Lamu Island to the nearby mainland when it hit the other vessel.

A Lamu resident at the hospital on Lamu Island said 13 passengers, including five children, had been admitted for treatment after being pulled from the water.

He said the small ferries typically take up to about 50 passengers from the island to the mainland, but survivors said the boat was overloaded with people and baggage.

Officials in Lamu said they were still trying to determine the exact number of passengers and how many people had managed to make it to shore but did not yet have precise figures.

Kenyans flock to the Indian Ocean coast over Christmas and New Year for holidays and Lamu is a popular tourist destination.

Muluka-Oluoch said Red Cross teams in Lamu also said the small ferry was overloaded.

"The boat was carrying 80 people. So far seven bodies have been taken to the mortuary and there are 20 survivors so far," she said.

Overloading was blamed for another ferry disaster off the Indian Ocean coast in neighbouring Tanzania in September. More than 200 people died when the MV Spice Islander sank as it sailed from Zanzibar to Pemba island.

Kim Jong Un named 'supreme leader' of North Korea's military

North Korea hailed Kim Jong Il's son as 'supreme leader' of the 1.2-million strong military, ramping up its campaign to install the young man as the nation's next leader even as the mourning for his father continued a week after his death, The Daily Mail reported.

Kim Jong Un made a third visit Saturday to the palace where his father's body is lying in state ? this time as 'supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces' and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

The new title and public show of support from the military leadership sent a strong signal that the nation will maintain Kim Jong Il's 'military first' policy for the time being.

Earlier Saturday, the newspaper Rodong Sinmun, mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, urged Kim Jong Un to accept the top military post: 'Comrade Kim Jong Un, please assume the supreme commandership, as wished by the people.'

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million.

Kim Jong Un was promoted to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party.

He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

Brief But Intense Meteor Shower On January 4th

PolygamousRanchKid writes with this quote:
"Sky watchers are in for their first treat of 2012, as the short but intense Quadrantid meteor shower will light up the northern sky in the early morning of Jan. 4. According to a NASA web page on the Quadrantids, there could be as many as 200 meteors per hour, though the average rate is about 60 to 100 per hour. ... The Quadrantids have not been studied as extensively as some of the better-known meteor showers like the Perseids and Geminids, possibly because it's best visible in far northern latitudes, where its appearance coincides with cold weather."

With Iowa's voting, GOP likely to plot future path

Republicans enter a new election year Tuesday debating more than just who should be their nominee for president against Barack Obama. They're engaged in a struggle over how radically they can or should change the country's course.

On one side is the tea party conservative, the kind of voter Richard Nixon once said belonged to a silent majority, who simmered as the party spent and piled up debt through the Bush years, then exploded with rage with the ascent of Democrat Barack Obama and even more spending and debt.

On the other side is the pragmatic, establishment Republican, who also yearns to change course but argues the party first must win power. These Republicans fear that confrontational politics and policies could scare off moderate independents, making a win more difficult and governing impossible.

The fault line was evident in 2010 primaries that purged moderate candidates in states such as Delaware and Nevada; in state capitols over how hard to hit public employees; and in the U.S. House of Representatives in clashes between party leaders prone to compromise and new members intent on drawing a hard line in the federal budget.

And it cuts through the presidential campaign, as tea party conservatives cheer candidates such as Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who vows to cut $1 trillion in spending in his first year, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who slams one rival for voting to raise the nation's debt ceiling eight times, and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, who boasts of her opposition to raising the government's debt ceiling last summer.

At the same time, pragmatists support candidates such as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who stresses a more collaborative approach to governing. Romney, for example, says he'd cut the federal work force, but through attrition, not layoffs.

"The Republican Party has an identity crisis," said Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Iowa Republican Party. "There is a split within the party."

Rick Halvorsen, an insurance salesman from Indianola, Iowa, and chairman of the Warren County Republican Party, is among those who want the party to be bolder, much bolder, even if it risks losing an election.

"The alternative is to lose our country," he said. "We're $15 trillion in debt. Nobody's got the intestinal fortitude to do what needs to be done. We're way past time to do something."

Worse, he said, the idea of softening the party's stand to win the election doesn't even guarantee victory. "That's what they told us about McCain," he said of the 2008 nominee who went on to lose the general election.

He decided late to support former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who urged Iowa Republicans to vote for someone who should win, not just someone who could win. "Don't put forward somebody who isn't good enough to do what's necessary to change this country," Santorum said.

Darwin Hofmeister, a farmer from Ackley, Iowa, is another Republican weary of compromise by his party.

"When we got a chance to make a difference, we didn't. George W. Bush, with a Republican Congress, he didn't change anything. Instead, we got more Medicare," said Hofmeister.

At a town hall meeting in Mason City, he asked Romney if he would really cut spending. He walked away unconvinced.

"It wasn't enough to convince me he's conservative," he said. "Now, that governor of Wisconsin. He stuck it out and now it's working."
