Any teachers out there? help finding a career?? | Education Reference

Question by coco233: Any teachers out there? help finding a career??
hi umm i?m in high school right now so its time for me to pick my majors and such. but all through my life i?ve always had to decide between two careers: teaching and interior design. i wanted to be a teacher b/c i wanted to make a difffernce in someones life and who knows i could end up being the next bill gate?s favorite teacher. but the downsides are that they don?t get paidd alot and that i dont know what subject i want to teach (i want to teach either 8th or 9th grade) math: im good at but i feel that it wouldnt be fun to teach. science: i think that its funner to teach b/c you can do many projects but i find the subject boring. english: i would like it if it were only vocabulary/spelling and reading novels. history: i think is pretty pointless but i also find that theres many projects you can do with it. and interior design is more of a hobbie than a passion or something i am good at it and i think it would be funner (grading papers, lesson plans. even though i like doing that

Answer by Mee
Based upon your language skills I think that you will have a lot of work to do before you are able to teach anyone else. I think you?re better served focusing on the education you are currently receiving than what is down the road. You also don?t have to pick a major right away in college ? and don?t have to go to college right away either. There are a lot of options out there in life. Finally, you can get paid a lot in teaching depending upon where you teach and what you teach.

Also, consider that if you go out and become an interior designer you can later go back and perhaps teach at a 2-yr or 4-yr college.

Asian markets mostly fall ahead of US jobs report (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? Asian stock markets mostly fell Friday after a decline on Wall Street and ahead of the release of closely watched U.S. employment figures.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Asia's biggest market, fell 1.2 percent to 8,955.30, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index declined 1.3 percent to 20,313.99.

The U.S. Labor Department announces figures for employment and the jobless rate in August later Friday. Employers are expected to have added 93,000 jobs. Such a figure would not significantly dent the current unemployment rate of 9.1 percent.

Fears that the U.S. economy is in danger of falling back into recession have dogged the markets, though recent indicators ? including gains in auto sales, manufacturing and consumer spending ? point to steady, though not strong, growth.

On the negative side, however, consumer confidence plunged in August to a two-year low and a key category that tracks business investment plans declined 0.9 percent in July.

"This is a big number," said Jackson Wong, vice president at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong, referring to the jobs report. "The market is still very cautious ahead of the non-farm payrolls data."

Investors watch the report as a key barometer of the health of the world's largest economy, which despite its recovery from the worst of the sub-prime mortgage crisis and the global financial meltdown has struggled to create enough jobs to sharply bring down the unemployment rate.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.3 percent to 2,523.30, while South Korea's Kospi moved 0.7 percent lower to 1,868.77. Markets in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Singapore also fell.

Benchmarks in the Philippines and India, however, bucked the losing trend to gain less than 1 percent each.

In New York on Thursday, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 1 percent to 11,493.57, giving up early gains of as much as 103 points and snapping a four day winning streak.

Bank stocks led the market lower after regulators announced enforcement measures against a former subsidiary of Goldman Sachs over mortgage and foreclosure practices. Jitters ahead of the release of the government's monthly jobs report also hurt sentiment.

Broader indices also fell. The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 1.2 percent to 1,204.42. The technology-focused Nasdaq composite index lost 1.3 percent to 2,546.04.

In currencies, the dollar strengthened slightly to 76.83 yen from 76.78 yen late in New York on Thursday. New Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda named Jun Azumi, a 49-year-old former journalist, as finance minister Friday as he launches his Cabinet. Azumi will be in charge of currency policy as Japan, the world's third-largest economy, struggles with the effects of a strong yen that remains near an all-time high against the dollar.

The euro, meanwhile, fell to $1.4266 from $1.4273.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 20 cents to $88.73 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 12 cents to settle at $88.93 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In London, Brent crude for October delivery was down 27 cents at $114.02 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Ancient furry rhino had snow shovel on its face

High on the Tibetan Plateau, paleontologists have uncovered the skull of a previously unknown species of ancient rhino, a woolly furred animal that came equipped with a built-in snow shovel on its face.

This curiosity, a flat, paddle-like horn that would have allowed it to brush away snow and find vegetation beneath, suggests the woolly rhinoceros was well-adapted for a cold, icy life in the Himalayas about 1 million years before the Ice Age. Those adaptations may have left the rhino perfectly poised to spread across Asia when global temperatures plummeted, ushering in the Ice Age.

"We think that the Tibetan Plateau may be a cradle for the origins of some of the Ice Age giants," said study author Xiaoming Wang, a curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Such large, furry mammals ruled the world during Earth's cold snap from 2.6 million to about 12,000 years ago. "It just happens to have the right environment to basically let animals acclimate themselves and be ready for the Ice Age cold."

Rhino, ready for cold
Wang and his colleagues uncovered the complete rhino skull and lower jaw, along with a neck vertebra, in southwestern Tibet. The 3-foot-long skull is 3.7 million years old. It would have belonged to an animal that weighed 1.2 to 1.4 tons, Wang said. That's close to the size of modern rhinoceroses and about 10 percent smaller than the woolly rhinos found a million years later during the Ice Age.

The new rhino has been dubbed Coelodonta thibetan.

No impressions of hair were found, but based on rhino hairs preserved in permafrost in Siberia, the researchers believe this rhino would have been covered with long hairs much like the fur of a modern yak.

But the most notable feature of the rhino skull was its large front horn, which was flattened to form a paddle.

"The horn is leaning forward; it's tilting forward from the nose," Wang said. "That is in line with the adaptation of snow-sweeping, so the animal does not have to strain its neck as much as it tries to sweep the snow."

The rhino had another feature that would have made it a master of winter weather. The teeth have high crowns, making them more durable and able to handle tough, high-altitude vegetation.

Pre-adapting
These winter-ready features would have made it a snap for the rhino or its evolutionary descendents to head downhill when the Ice Age came along, Wang said.

There's no fossil record of this particular rhino species during the Ice Age, Wang said, but woolly rhinos were living in present-day Siberia, a much lower elevation than the Tibetan Plateau, during that period. The researchers suspect that many an Ice Age giant had its Himalayan ancestors to thank for the adaptations that made such a spread possible. For example, they report in the Sept. 2 issue of the journal Science, the evolution of the Himalayan blue sheep, or bharal, may have followed a similar path.

"Once the Ice Age came along, it's a matter for them to basically come down from the high plateau and go into the rest of the world," Wang said. "They are already pre-adapted."

9 companies recall fuel gel for firepots

(AP) ? Nine companies are recalling about 2 million bottles and jugs of the gel fuel used in outdoor patio decorations known as firepots because of the risk of serious burns.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the gel fuel has been linked to several dozen cases in which people were burned when they couldn't tell whether the flame was out. Pouring more gel on a burning pot can lead to dangerous flares or burns.

The companies are: Bird Brain Inc. of Ypsilanti, Mich.; Bond Manufacturing of Antioch, Calif.; Sunjel Company of Milwaukee; Fuel Barons Inc. of Lake Tahoe, Nev.; Lamplight Farms Inc. of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; Luminosities Inc. of St. Paul, Minn.; Pacific Decor Ltd. of Woodinville, Wash.; Real Flame of Racine, Wis.; Smart Solar USA of Oldsmar, Fla.

The commission says Marshall Group of Elkhart, Ind., pulled out of the public announcement at the last minute. The agency was continuing talks with the company about a voluntary recall.

The commission's head, Inez Tenenbaum, said Thursday the agency wants to make consumers aware of the recall with the approaching Labor Day weekend. She urged people to stop using the pourable gel fuel and to contact the manufacturer or distributor for a refund.

"It's a dangerous product that we want to warn consumers to stop using," she said. "Stop, drop and roll or trying to smother it (the flames) does not work."

Flash fires created by the thick, alcohol-based gels are difficult to put out with water and more effectively stopped with dry powder extinguishers, she said.

The commission began investigating firepots a few months ago and issued a flash fire hazard warning on pourable gel fuels in June.
